Depth and Hardness of Laser Hardening for Molds

Laser Hardening

Laser hardening is an efficient surface treatment technology that strengthens material hardness and wear resistance through rapid heating and cooling. The depth and hardness of laser-hardening are two critical parameters that determine its effectiveness.

What is Mold Laser Hardening?

Mold laser-hardening (Laser Hardening for Molds) is a high-precision surface strengthening technology. It uses a high-energy laser beam to rapidly heat the mold surface and form a hardened layer, thereby improving wear resistance and prolonging service life.

Compared with traditional quenching methods, mold laser hardening offers several advantages: a small heat-affected zone, high hardness, low deformation, and high precision. It is especially suitable for localized hardening and wear resistance enhancement in injection molds, die-casting molds, and stamping molds.

Mold Laser Hardening Depth

Laser-hardening depth refers to the penetration of laser energy within the hardened surface layer of the material, generally ranging from 0.2 mm to 2 mm. The depth depends on laser power, scanning speed, number of passes, and the material’s thermal conductivity.

  • Higher laser power → greater hardening depth
  • Slower scanning speed → deeper hardening
  • More passes → deeper layer
  • Materials with lower thermal conductivity → deeper hardening

Factors Affecting Mold Laser Hardening Depth

  • Laser power and energy density: Higher power results in a deeper hardened layer.
  • Scanning speed: Slower speed increases depth; faster speed reduces it.
  • Thermal conductivity of mold steel: High-conductivity steels result in shallower hardened layers.
  • Surface treatment: Applying black paint or coatings increases laser absorption, thus increasing depth.

In mold applications, the laser hardening depth is usually controlled between 0.3 mm and 1.5 mm to balance wear resistance and prevent mold deformation or cracking.

Mold Laser Hardening Hardness

Laser-hardening hardness refers to the surface hardness of the material in the hardened region. After laser hardening, the grain size in the treated area is reduced, and the number of grain boundaries increases, forming a fine and uniform microstructure. This microstructure significantly improves the material’s hardness.

Typical mold laser hardening hardness:

  • Carbon steel molds (45# steel): HRC 50–55
  • Alloy steel molds (40Cr, 42CrMo): HRC 55–60
  • Tool steel molds (H13, Cr12MoV): HRC 58–65

High hardness significantly enhances mold wear resistance and service life. Proper tempering can also balance toughness and impact resistance.

Advantages of Mold Laser Hardening

  • Improved wear resistance: High hardness extends mold lifespan.
  • Small heat-affected zone: Localized hardening avoids overall deformation.
  • Precision and controllability: Suitable for complex cavities and localized areas.
  • Environmentally friendly and efficient: No quenching medium required, reducing cracks and oxidation.
  • Cost reduction: Minimizes mold scrapping and maintenance costs.

Applications of Mold Laser Hardening

  • Injection molds: Local wear resistance enhancement and cavity surface hardening.
  • Die-casting molds: Surface wear repair and reinforcement.
  • Stamping molds: Edge and cavity crack repair.
  • High-precision molds: Fine hardening, wear resistance enhancement, and surface reinforcement.

In summary, mold laser-hardening depth is generally 0.2–2 mm, and mold laser-hardening hardness can reach HRC 50–65. This high-precision surface treatment significantly enhances wear resistance, extends mold life, and reduces maintenance costs. With the growing demands for precision and durability in the mold manufacturing industry, mold laser hardening technology is increasingly becoming the preferred method for surface strengthening and repair of precision, injection, and die-casting molds.
