The Impact of Heat Treatment on Mold Service Life

Heat Treatment

In mold manufacturing, heat treatment is a critical process that determines the service life and performance of molds. Molds operate under complex conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, friction, and corrosion. If the heat treatment process is not properly executed, it can easily lead to cracking, wear, deformation, and other failures, significantly shortening mold life. In contrast, scientific heat treatment methods can greatly improve the strength, hardness, toughness, and wear resistance of molds, thereby extending their service life and reducing production costs.

The Role of Heat Treatment in Mold Life Extension

Improving Hardness and Wear Resistance

Molds used in injection molding, stamping, and die casting must withstand high-frequency friction. Through quenching and surface hardening, the surface hardness of molds can be significantly improved, reducing wear.

Enhancing Toughness and Impact Resistance

In addition to hardness, molds also require toughness to resist impact loads. A proper tempering process achieves a balance between hardness and toughness, preventing brittle fracture.

Increasing High-Temperature and Fatigue Resistance

In die-casting molds or high-temperature injection molds, thermal fatigue is a common failure mode. Processes such as tempering and nitriding improve mold stability at high temperatures and delay thermal cracking.

Improving Corrosion Resistance

Some molds operate in contact with corrosive resins or molten metals. Heat treatment combined with surface treatments (e.g., nitriding, hard chromium plating) enhances resistance to oxidation and corrosion.

Process Parameter Control

Heating Temperature and Cooling Methods

Choosing the right heating temperature ensures complete dissolution of carbides. Proper cooling rates (such as step quenching or isothermal quenching) reduce deformation and achieve uniform carbide distribution, improving mold impact toughness.

Pre-Treatment Processes

  • Post-forging annealing: Eliminates forging stress and adjusts carbide distribution. For example, T8A steel punches show a 10x increase in service life after low-temperature quenching.
  • Grain refinement: Refining W6Mo5Cr4V2 steel grain size from grade 10 to grade 12 increases bending strength by 20%.

Influence of Surface Heat Treatment on Mold Life

Beyond conventional heat treatment, surface heat treatment is also key to extending mold life. It improves surface hardness, reduces roughness, and enhances wear and corrosion resistance.

  • Increasing Surface Hardness
Surface heat treatment significantly increases surface hardness, boosting wear resistance and prolonging mold service life.
  • Improving Surface Roughness
It refines the mold surface finish, reducing wear and enhancing durability.

Problem-Solving with Surface Treatment

  • Adhesion issues (sticking): Apply surface hardening/coating to increase hardness and reduce surface roughness.
  • Damage or cracking: Use heat treatment to enhance hardness and toughness.

Optimization of Material Properties

Mold Material Selection

Replacing traditional 3Cr2W8V steel with 4Cr5MoSiV1 steel (H13 steel) significantly improves high-temperature performance and thermal fatigue resistance, extending service life by 3–5 times.

Carbide Distribution Control

Through high-temperature austenitizing and isothermal annealing, carbide non-uniformity can be reduced from grades 8–9 to grades 6–7, which can double the service life of cold heading dies.

Heat treatment is a key step in extending mold life. By selecting appropriate processes, optimizing parameters, and combining advanced techniques such as vacuum heat treatment and nitriding + coating hybrid methods, mold service life and reliability can be greatly improved. For mold manufacturers, enhancing heat treatment technology not only reduces replacement frequency but also lowers costs and improves competitiveness.
